Job Description:

The Wall Street Journal is looking for an assistant editor to join its award-winning Off Duty section, a luxury lifestyle section that offers readers winning strategies when it comes to mastering (and investing in) fashion, travel, food and drink, interior design and cars, and is published on all WSJ platforms, print and digital. This person will take on a wide range of administrative and journalistic duties and also assist in digital publishing/strategy and social media. The ideal candidate will be someone with strong problem-solving skills, extremely meticulous and organized, with a passion for lifestyle subject areas, particularly food, design and travel.

You will have a front-row seat to absorb how such stories come together from concept to visual brainstorming to the photo shoots in our in-house photo studio to the print design and digital production, and the back-end analysis of data related to the stories’ digital performance. Though this is not a writing position, a successful candidate with unusually strong writing and reporting skills will have opportunities to pitch and execute stories.

You should be someone who can juggle a wide variety of tasks in a fast-paced, demanding environment and work efficiently to meet deadlines.

You will:

  • Proofread food, design and travel stories

  • Perform research

  • Fact check travel stories

  • Build recipes in Narrator

  • Build online stories using a CMS

  • Request high-res images for stories

  • Call in, pack and return products for photoshoots

  • Pitch and write articles for food, travel and design (if candidate has demonstrated aptitude)

  • Create proofing and online build documents when stories go to proof

  • Create Slack channels and digital-planning summaries for stories for editors

  • Gather research materials (books, contacts, etc.) for editors

  • Field pitch emails from freelancers and PR reps and pass along promising ones to editors

  • Organize the design editorial calendar and art meeting notes

  • Assist photographer and photo ed itors during in-house photoshoots

  • Write sales lineup descriptions for the sales team

  • Book conference rooms for meetings and schedule for larger events

  • Purchase office supplies for the section

  • Do everything necessary to move production forward (pick up items yourself, arrange messengers, go to other locations to complete tasks, etc.)

  • Interact with publicists to stay on top of travel, design and food news

  • Perform miscellaneous administration (invoices, contracts, tear sheets)

  • Produce and send out PDFs

You have:

  • A Bachelor’s degree (Journalism focus a bonus)

  • Relevant internships

  • 1+ years experience working in a fast-paced publishing environment

  • A demonstrated ability to multitask and excellent time-management skills.

  • Resourceful, dogged research and problem-solving skills

  • A droll sense of humor

  • Visual and verbal sophistication and a hunger for more

The position will be based in New York City and will report to the editor of Off Duty.
