Job Description:

The Wall Street Journal is looking for a full-stack engineer to build new kinds of editorial tools and projects. You will be a part of the Journal’s R&D Lab and will work collaboratively across the organization to deploy novel newsroom products.

The R&D Lab is a part of the Journal’s Strategy department, which features the full range of journalistic talent—print, video, and graphics journalists, editors, product managers, engineers, designers, data scientists, artificial intelligence experts, and more. The R&D Lab uses data science, machine learning, and other forms of computational journalism to report stories and support other journalists across the Journal. We are a lively, close-knit community that works collaboratively to create new kinds of journalism and present it in exciting ways. This role will require both journalistic instincts and engineering skills, so the ideal candidate will be passionate about growing in both of these areas.


  • Turn research ideas into production tools that help the Journal break news and create new kinds of journalism.

  • Help acquire, clean, and store datasets both large and small.

  • Build and maintain ML- and NLP-backed dashboards that help editors and journalists find insights in otherwise opaque, unstructured data.

  • Create notification systems—Slack, Signal, SMS, email—that can tell our journalists when a new piece of data might be relevant to them.

  • Create feedback mechanisms for readers, journalists, and editors to help train next-generation ML models.

  • Create new ways to find and present data to technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Build prototypes quickly, and then turn those prototypes into reusable, scalable applications.

  • Communicate your technical work to colleagues from different desks and bureaus, including non-technical colleagues.

  • You tell us: what are some exciting computational journalism projects that you want to work on?


  • A minimum of three years of related work experience. If you didn’t work in or adjacent to media, then you should have a demonstrable passion for news.

  • Expertise in Git, HTML, CSS, JavaScript (both in a browser and on a server). Python is not required, but if you don’t know it already, then you will need a willingness to learn new languages.

  • Experience with Express.js and React.

  • Experience building APIs and web services.

  • Some familiarity with using SQL and designing databases.

  • If you have cloud services and infrastructure experience, that’s a plus. If you don’t have this, then you should have a demonstrable ability to learn new workflows quickly.

  • The ability to juggle many tasks and work independently and efficiently. While we often work collaboratively, we’re a small team that has to keep up with the news, so the ideal candidate will know how to work and problem-solve quickly and autonomously.

  • Essential: the ability to work and communicate effectively with a wide range of people from a wide range of backgrounds.
