Job Description:
The Wall Street Journal is looking for a Senior Director, Finance, WSJ Newsroom, to oversee all operating and capital expenses for the newsroom, and to advise the Editor in Chief and Managing Editor on all financial matters regarding hiring, new initiatives and the proper stewardship of our funds.
You’ll be an integral part of the Managing Editor’s office and work with senior newsroom editors and leaders around the globe to help shape the future Journal. You will be responsible for the budgeting, forecasting and analysis of the newsroom budget in close partnership with our colleagues on the finance team of Dow Jones & Co., our parent company, and you will provide leadership and counsel on the newsroom’s strategy and investment asks. You will also work closely with our commercial colleagues on the financial components of initiatives that affect the newsroom. In addition, you will be responsible for headcount and compensation tracking and planning, and you will manage a team of three that oversees the non-compensation part of the operating budget, including vendor and freelance contracts, onboarding and payments.

This position reports to the Managing Editor of The Wall Street Journal and is part of that office’s senior leadership team, along with the Assistant Managing Editors for Talent and Operations. While you may be asked to start remotely, the job will eventually be based in our New York office.
You Will:
Manage the budgeting, forecasting and financial analysis for The Wall Street Journal newsroom in close partnership with the Dow Jones corporate finance team
Provide monthly results to senior Journal news management
Provide leadership and counsel on the newsroom’s strategy and investment asks
Oversee monthly reporting that is provided at the cost-center owner level
Partner with Dow Jones Finance, People, Marketing and Legal departments on the newsroom’s behalf on finance and operational matters
Provide solutions based on data from financial and trend analysis
Manage the compensation-planning process for the global newsroom (merit, union, pay equity, market and promotion adjustments)
Work with the Dow Jones People team to manage the timing and financial impact of contingent workers
Manage a team of three, overseeing performance management and their professional development
You Have:
Experience communicating and providing financial guidance to senior management
Excellent proficiency with standard financial tools needed to produce analyses for optimizing news resources and assisting with our decision-making
A mastery of presentation, spreadsheet, database and financial applications
SAP financial system experience strongly preferred
Experience in international business and dealing with foreign exchange
Experience with contract negotiations
The ability to excel in both independent and collaborative work environments
Planning and organizational skills including effective time management
The ability to see challenges early and be solutions oriented
The ability to define problems, collect data and draw valid conclusions
Exceptional analytical skills
The ability to handle a range of tasks at the same time, and to be able to thrive under pressure
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Bachelor’s degree in business administration, finance or accounting. Master’s degree is a plus.
8+ years of experience in an FP&A role; leadership experience required
