The Wall Street Journal is looking for a general assignment reporter to join WSJ Sports. This position requires a high-energy, self-starting reporter who can identify original enterprise stories and chase breaking news in all of the major sports, with a special emphasis on the NBA and WNBA. You will also work alongside other sports colleagues in reporting and executing bigger projects. WSJ Sports specializes in unexpected stories that speak to both hard-core fans and readers who don’t think of themselves as sports nuts. We are looking for an original thinker who can see beyond the conventional wisdom of the daily sports discussion. A desire to unpack how money flows through teams and leagues is a plus.
You will report to Bruce Orwall, Global Sports Editor. While you will likely start the job working remotely, you will eventually be based in our New York office.
Develop original enterprise across the major sports, with an emphasis on professional basketball.
Find smart, unexpected angles that advance major breaking news events.
Work with colleagues to conceive and executive bigger projects around major sports themes and events.
At least one or two years of professional journalism experience.
A demonstrated ability to separate from the pack and find original approaches to even the most commoditized sports events.
An ability and desire to use data to unearth fresh stories on how games are played and how sports themselves are changing.
A commitment to collegial work on a small, fast-moving team.
To apply, please submit your resume, a cover letter explaining how you would approach the job and several clips.
