Dow Jones Supervising Producer, What's News in NEW YORK, New York

Job Description:

The Wall Street Journal is seeking a supervising producer to join its daily news podcast, What’s News.

What's News brings listeners the headlines and business news that move markets and the world—twice every weekday. In 10-12 minutes, listeners will hear WSJ scoops and exclusives, with insight and analysis from the reporters who broke the stories.

Top candidates for this role will have excellent editorial judgment, strong production experience and team-management skills, be highly organized, with an ability to manage multiple projects at once. Collaboration, decisiveness and clear communication are critical for this role. Though you will be a key manager in this unit, this is a hands-on role. We are seeking an experienced producer with a strong track record of pitching, developing, field producing and elevating original audio series.

This position will be based in our New York City office and reports to the Executive Producer, Audio.

You will:

  • Collaborate closely with the What’s News PM host and the executive producer to conceptualize and execute the evening edition of the podcast on a daily basis.

  • Manage assignments for audio producers and help produce and edit audio for the show.

  • Pitch, book interviews, research, fact-check, script and edit in the WSJ voice.

  • Attend pitch meetings, offer editorial feedback, and contribute to story generation and idea development.

  • Interview WSJ reporters and sources, coaching those without audio experience.

  • Provide clear, constructive notes and timely feedback on scripts and cuts.

  • Ensure all content meets the highest production value and all WSJ journalistic and legal standards are followed.

  • Complete additional duties as assigned, including supporting other WSJ podcast productions in New York and London.

You have:

  • At least 5 years of experience in audio storytelling for a daily podcast or radio program, preferably in news.

  • Experience leading and managing a team in a collaborative and creative way.

  • Strong journalistic judgment, with experience fact-checking and editing audio scripts, both before and after recordings.

  • Professional experience with using Adobe Audition, Pro Tools or other DAWs to cut and mix audio for audio publications.

  • Ability to learn and write in a specific brand voice.

  • Flexibility to switch gears as needed and react to breaking news while remaining calm under deadline pressure.

  • Experience communicating with and booking talent.

  • Experience field recording and on-air work is a plus.
