The Wall Street Journal is looking for a Mid–Senior level UX Designer to join the WSJ Product Design team with a focus on helping our teams think inclusively in how they approach product design. The role is highly collaborative and will involve working with all members of the Product Design Team, as well as various partners throughout WSJ DXS (Digital Experience and Strategy). This role will help shape the vision for our products and drive cohesive narratives across multiple platforms and touch points.
Our ideal candidate will have experience working with digital subscription products, and a comprehensive understanding of user journeys, interaction and engagement. Experience working within news media or digital publication is a bonus, but not essential.
We envision this role bringing an additional layer of strategic thinking and fidelity to our design work, which will involve taking the time to understand our broader business goals, and how to translate them into actionable insights, and tangible outcomes. This will also include maintaining the balance between our business requirements and our users needs, ensuring that we are making sustainable decisions and building foundations for long-term success.
We see this role as a conduit between the design of our products, our strategic thinking and business requirements. This is an opportunity to have a meaningful impact and help shape the future of how our audiences experience our best-in-class journalism. In particular, beyond the ongoing design duties, this person will have a remit to provide strategic thinking and insights to our other designers, researchers, product managers, engineers and colleagues of other disciplines on how to think inclusively in their product development. We are committed to diversity, equity and inclusion and want to be sure that focus is running through all our product processes.

Design at WSJ
We know that the best candidates are not always the obvious ones. Rather than sticking to a rigid criteria, we search for exceptional candidates with the following in mind:
While most of our roles have specific requirements, we don't have an exact person in mind. Even if candidates don't tick every box on paper, it doesn't mean they couldn't be a great fit. Our criteria are never rigid, and we evaluate each candidate on individual merit.
Our process is never automated and we take the time to review every application we receive. This usually entails reading the CV and reviewing each candidate's portfolio or website in detail before making any decisions.
Attentive to Detail
It goes without saying that an attention to detail matters. This isn't just the work in a portfolio, but everything we have to evaluate an application, including the CV, cover letter and how the work is presented. We consider these details just as much as the work itself.
Diverse in Background
People's backgrounds and careers are rarely linear or meet exact criteria. We're always on the lookout for people with different backgrounds, skill sets, and experiences and we often see these as an advantage.
People, Not Portfolios
Quality of work and tangible skills are important, but we consider more than that. Day-to-day we work with people, not their portfolios. Specific skills can be developed with a willingness to learn, but the right team dynamic is just as important.
Diversity and inclusiveness is one of the key factors in the success of our team. We actively encourage anyone who believes they are a good fit to apply.
