The Wall Street Journal is looking for a news minded, culturally curious, entrepreneurial editor to join our Live Journalism team. You will own and shape the agendas and communities for two of our professional verticals: the Journal’s CFO and CIO Networks.
This is a period of growth and transformation for WSJ events. The team has moved from in-person conferences and festivals to a full calendar of virtual events and, now, will embark on producing hybrid events. Working with the head of live journalism and special content, you will help shape our approach in this new multichannel medium: specifically how we plan, program and build new audiences for these professional networks.
We're looking for a journalist who has experience crafting franchises and a track record of getting things done with an emphasis on originality and exclusivity. You will have a network that dives into the mindset of finance and IT professionals, spanning multiple industries. The ideal candidate will also have knowledge of the current competitive landscape and a sense for the business topics those leaders want to read and talk about.
Based in the newsroom, you will work across bureaus to develop content and visuals for conversations that take place onstage, and will be expected to also source, build, own, and manage relationships with business and political leaders featured at Journal gatherings. Not only will you lead some of the conversations that take place on our stage, but you’ll work on how to continue the conversation post-event: how should we package event coverage from print, online, newsletters, video, and audio to reach new audiences?
This position requires creativity, entrepreneurship and organization in equal measure. You will report to the Editor for Live Journalism, Kim Last. While you may start the job working from home, you will eventually be based in our New York or San Francisco office. To apply, please send your resume and a cover letter explaining why to Kim Last.
Other qualifications for the job include:
A background and/or interest in business news content and not traditional event management (Note: this role will not be responsible for event production–we have a dedicated team at Dow Jones who we partner with to build our events)
The ability to keep calm and carry on: Events have many moving components, can you keep your cool juggling the various details?
An in-depth knowledge of the finance and tech, with a healthy track record of relationships with leaders in the space;
A love of research and reporting: What’s something our audience hasn’t heard or seen before?
Superior writing and editing skills;
Bonus points if you have worked in events beforehand and know how they work.
